CARB Regulations: Are Trucking Companies Ready to Comply?

If you are a shipper that routes freight within the state of California you should be aware of the requirements for equipment to meet California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations next year and how enforcement on compliance will change over the next few years.

Gordon Trucking is CARB compliantCARB regulations apply to trucks, trailers and refrigeration units that are being used by trucking companies to serve the state of California.  Gordon Trucking is 100% compliant with the regulations that impact all three types of equipment.

In fact, GTI is ahead of the required time frames.  As a reminder, by January 1, 2012, any fleet serving California must have 50% of its trucks in compliance with the CARB Truck & Bus rule.

The CARB requirement for large fleet truck compliance is:

  • 25% by 1/1/11
  • 50% by 1/1/12
  • 75% by 1/1/13
  • 100% by 1/1/14

Over 50% of GTI's 3-axle tractors already meet the CARB Truck & Bus requirements.

The CARB requirement for large fleet trailer compliance is:CARB Compliant GTI Truck and Trailer

  • 15% by 1/1/11
  • 30% by 1/1/12
  • 50% by 1/1/13
  • 75% by 1/1/14
  • 100% by 1/1/15

63% of GTI's trailer fleet (6,100 trailers) are outfitted with aerodynamic belly fairings and 100% of the trailing equipment have SmartWay certifiied fuel efficient tires.

CARB Compliant Transport Refrigeration UnitRefrigerated trucking companies must also comply with the CARB Transport Refrigerated Unit (TRU) regulations. 2004 model year or older refrigerated units face a December 31, 2011 compliance deadline to either retrofit current engines with lower level emissions reduction systems or purchase a new engine. Gordon Trucking has made the necessary investments to ensure all of it's temperature control units are 100% compliant.

GTI takes Environmental Responsibility very seriously. Our new equipment order includes 1,300 new trucks over the next three years.  The expense required to comply is significant, but given the extensive services we provide into, within, and out of California it is important to us that we remain compliant as we near these upcoming regulation mile markers.  We would like to assure you that GTI is and will continue to be in position to serve you legally and in complete compliance with the CARB requirements.

That is awesome numbers regarding the CARB Regulation for CA. Do we know how we "Gordon" compare to other transportation companies with assets? Great job to all who had their hands in making sure we are ahead of the compliance due date.

Tae No, We don't know for sure how we compare to other truckload carriers that serve California but we are fairly confident that we are tracking ahead of most. Most large trucking companies will have the capital to make the necessary investments so it is more a question of whether they are taking the regulations serious. The regulations call for fines for carriers that are not in compliance and fines for shippers that use carriers that are not in compliance. It will come down to how diligent California enforces penalties. Small trucking companies and independents may struggle to keep up with the regulations as the cost of class 8 trucks and trailers continue to skyrocket.

Thank you for the response. The numbers do show us ahead of the game. And as you mentioned it will definately impact the smaller outfits out there. Again, great job!
